The first trailer for Oscar-winning director Ron Howard's tale of rivalry and debauchery on the 1970s Formula One racing circuit, Rush, has hit the internet.
The action-biopic stars Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Brühl as racing rivals and real-life friends James Hunt and Niki Lauda, following the pair as they battle it out for the 1976 championship. Olivia Wilde stars as Hunt's long-suffering wife Suzy Miller, while Alexandra Maria Lara plays Lauda's first wife Marlene Knaus. With a screenplay by the Oscar-winning screenwriter of The Queen, Peter Morgan, Rush centres on the events surrounding Lauda's horrific crash during that year's German Grand Prix on the world famous Nürburgring circuit and his remarkable comeback just two races later despite appalling burns and the loss of both his eyelids in the resulting fire.
Hunt and Lauda once shared a one-bedroom flat in London but could not have been more different personalities. The wild-living Englishman, who reputedly slept with more than 500 women during his lifetime, routinely took drugs and had sex just minutes before taking to the racetrack. The meticulous Austrian, meanwhile, was known for his intense behind-the-scenes work testing and refining cars to perfection.
"Lauda and Hunt were rock stars of the race track: two absolute pros at the top of their game, in a time when sex was safe, driving was dangerous and all bets were off," said Howard, whose films include Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind and Cocoon. "They were also complicated, fascinating men and born rivals. Rush will be as much about that personal rivalry as it will be about the thrill of the race."
Australian actor Hemsworth is best known for his roles in comic book movies Thor and The Avengers, in which he played the Norse deity. Spanish-born Austrian actor Brühl is known to audiences for his turn as a Nazi war hero in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, as well as for his award-winning turn in the post-iron curtain drama Good Bye, Lenin!
Rush is due to hit cinemas in the UK on 13 September, while US audiences will get to see it one week later.
